“Comfort, give comfort to my people, says your God.” (Isaiah 40:1) Our God cares for each of His children, and He calls for us to care for each other. His commandments are so we do no harm and so we live in respect and love for one another. It is where we fall short that we cause harm, it is where we cause harm that we sin, it is where we sin that we are called to repent and return to the path of the Lord.
“A voice cries out: In the desert prepare the way of the LORD! Make straight in the wasteland a highway for our God!” (Isaiah 40:3) He sends His angels as messengers. He writes His words in stone. He sends His prophets to tell us of what was, is now and ever shall be. Some will listen, but others will close their ears. The message will not fade, it shall ever be before us, it is but for us to watch and listen, for us to see and hear what has been revealed. “Then the glory of the LORD shall be revealed, and all mankind shall see it together; for the mouth of the LORD has spoken.” (Isaiah 40:5)
Though He speaks to guide us, if we do not seek to understand, we will lose the way. The message He sends is not mere words, it is a message of caring, instructions for a path to the light. What He inspires in the words of prophets is to guide us away from the darkness, away from a place where hearts are cold. He sends the light to guide the way to where the warmth of love is forever found. “Like a shepherd he feeds his flock; in his arms he gathers the lambs, carrying them in his bosom, and leading the ewes with care.” (Isaiah 40:11)
Should one of us stumble and lose our way; He is there searching to lead us back to the light. It is only if we do not wish to listen that we will not hear the calling of our Shepherd. Still, He will continue to call and joy will resound in heaven for the lost who are found. He said to His disciples, “If a man has a hundred sheep and one of them goes astray, will he not leave the ninety-nine in the hills and go in search of the stray? And if he finds it, amen, I say to you, he rejoices more over it than over the ninety-nine that did not stray. In just the same way, it is not the will of your heavenly Father that one of these little ones be lost.” (Matthew 18:12-14)
We should not be surprised, then, as He walked among us that He sought out the sick, the afflicted, the sinners; all those who needed comfort, healing, and redemption. As He did then, He does now; He calls out to each of us that we might find the way to His kingdom.
May the Lord be with you always,
Prayer Soldier
