We love because he first loved us. If anyone says, “I love God,” but hates his brother, he is a liar; for whoever does not love a brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen. This is the commandment we have from him: whoever loves God must also love his brother. (1 John 4:19-21)
Jesus told us that He gave us a new commandment, to love one another as He loves us. In this way, for us to love Christ, we must also love one another if we are to be in full union with our Lord and Savior. If love is not in our heart for His children, then, it is also not fully in our heart for God.
We may find it easy to love those who are close to us, but the commandment was not give that we should love one and deny another. Love is not simply a matter of word, it is also a matter of deed. Jesus taught many parables to tell us that what is in our heart, what is in our soul, is revealed by what we do and what we fail to do.
He came to Nazareth, where he had grown up, and went according to his custom into the synagogue on the sabbath day. He stood up to read and was handed a scroll of the prophet Isaiah. He unrolled the scroll and found the passage where it was written: “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring glad tidings to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, and to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord.” Rolling up the scroll, he handed it back to the attendant and sat down, and the eyes of all in the synagogue looked intently at him. He said to them, “Today this scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing.” And all spoke highly of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his mouth. (Luke 4:16-22)
What was written was fulfilled; for this we should rejoice and be glad, for in the fulfillment of the scriptures, we have been offered forgiveness for our sins and the path to everlasting life in the kingdom of heaven. We have the scripture to tell us of what was, but could we wonder the blessings of those who were able to see the Lord and hear His words?
Though we live in a time many years from when our Lord and Savior walked the land, He is still in our presence. Through the study of His words and the accounts of His deeds we come to know what He sought to teach us. Through prayer, we can speak to Him. As we look around us, we can see how He moves in our lives.
Some seek to flock to Him for as those who spoke highly of Him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from His mouth, they seek the blessings of the Word and the joy which comes from the love of the Lord. Others are not sure of what they believe or are fearful of approaching Him for they either deny their sin or fear their sin. In effect, they flee from Him because they are captive of their sin, but through His sacrifice upon the cross, God gave us the opportunity to be liberated from our sin if we believe in Him. Blessed are we in the mercy and forgiveness of the Lord.
