How Do We Pray?

They tested God in their hearts, demanding the food they craved. They spoke against God, and said, "Can God spread a table in the wilderness?" (Psalms 78:18-19)

In prayer, we present our petitions to God. We tell Him what we desire of Him, but do we listen for what He desires of us? Is our relationship with Him only for our wants or is it a relationship where we seek to serve Him?

As we face trial and tribulation, we are quick to raise our voices to Him, but what do we do when all is well and we are at peace? Do we remember to pray to Him? Do we remember to thank Him for our blessings? Do we remember to ask Him what He desires of us; how we may offer the gifts and talents He has bestowed upon us so that we may do His will?

It is not that we should bargain with God, but that we should seek to offer our love and receive His. We should seek to become instruments of His peace. It is right that we should present our petitions to Him, for He instructed us how to pray (Matthew 6:9-14) (Matthew 18:19), but we must also look for how we may offer ourselves so that His will may be done on earth as it is in heaven. Let us, then, open our hearts, pray and allow ourselves to be guided to His work.

Blessed are those who listen for His call, for He will guide them to the blessings of His work.
