The Wisdom and Food From Heaven
Scripture:
Wisdom has built herself a house, she has hewn her out seven pillars. She has slain her victims, mingled her wine, and set forth her table. She has sent her maids to invite to the tower, and to the walls of the city: Whosoever is a little one, let him come to me. And to the unwise she said: Come, eat my bread, and drink the wine which I have mingled for you. Forsake childishness, and live, and walk by the ways of prudence.
(Proverbs 9:1-6)
See therefore, brethren, how you walk circumspectly: not as unwise, but as wise: redeeming the time, because the days are evil. Wherefore become not unwise, but understanding what is the will of God. And be not drunk with wine, wherein is luxury; but be filled with the holy Spirit, speaking to yourselves in psalms, and hymns, and spiritual canticles, singing and making melody in your hearts to the Lord; giving thanks always for all things, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, to God and the Father:
(Ephesians 5:15-20)
I am the living bread which came down from heaven. If any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever; and the bread that I will give, is my flesh, for the life of the world. The Jews therefore strove among themselves, saying: How can this man give us his flesh to eat? Then Jesus said to them: Amen, amen I say unto you: Except you eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, you shall not have life in you. He that eats my flesh, and drinks my blood, has everlasting life: and I will raise him up in the last day.
For my flesh is meat indeed: and my blood is drink indeed. He that eats my flesh, and drinks my blood, abides in me, and I in him. As the living Father has sent me, and I live by the Father; so he that eats me, the same also shall live by me.
( John 6:51-58 )
Reflection:
Wisdom does not come simply from an accumulation of knowledge, it comes from understanding what God asks of us. We may know many things, but if we do not understand what is right and just in the eyes of God, our knowledge may be put to the wrong uses and for the wrong purposes. If we are to obtain the full blessings of wisdom, then, we must seek to learn the ways of the One who created all and who determines every just purpose under the sun.
The wisdom which God desires to grow within us is contained within His Word, but we must be careful how we seek to gain it, for like knowledge, words do not help us unless we comprehend what is right and just in the eyes of God. Did not Satan tempt the only begotten Son of God with what is written in scriptures? (cf. Matthew 4:1-11) The Word made flesh, though, provided the full context of the Word to reveal the deception of Satan which comes through partiality, which is the presentation of truth without the fullness of the context required to enable correct understanding. Only if we allow the Holy Spirit to guide us in our study and prayers of discernment will we be led to the complete context required to comprehend what is right and just in the eyes of God. (cf. John 14:26, 1 John 5:6)
To sustain us on our spiritual journey and to nourish our soul, our Lord and Savior stooped to become our food. Through His body and blood, we receive the food of eternal life, for as we receive Him, we too become part of the body of Christ. Let us, then, pray that He will sustain us so we may prepare for the day He will gather in the faithful to walk with Him forever within His kingdom. Let us pray we will learn all the blessings of His Word and that through the wisdom which it contains, we will be fortified to do always what is right and just and to share with one another the blessings of what is right and just in the eyes of God.
Questions for further reflection:
In what ways do we endeavor to receive the wisdom of the Lord?
In what ways do we allow the Holy Spirit to guide us?
In what ways does the only begotten Son of God nourish us mind, body, and soul?
May the peace and blessings of the Lord be with you always,
Prayer Soldier
