The Servant of God's Will
Scripture:
And he said to me: You are my servant Israel, for in you will I glory.
And now says the Lord, that formed me from the womb to be his servant, that I may bring back Jacob unto him, and Israel will not be gathered together: and I am glorified in the eyes of the Lord, and my God is made my strength. And he said: It is a small thing that you should be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob, and to convert the dregs of Israel. Behold, I have given you to be the light of the Gentiles, that you may be my salvation even to the farthest part of the earth. (Isaiah 49:3, 5-6)
Paul, called to be an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, and Sosthenes a brother, to the church of God that is at Corinth, to them that are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, with all that invoke the name of our Lord Jesus Christ in every place of theirs and ours. Grace to you and peace, from God our father and from the Lord Jesus Christ.
(1 Corinthians 1:1-3)
The next day, John saw Jesus coming to him; and he said: Behold the Lamb of God. Behold him who takes away the sin of the world. This is he of whom I said: After me there comes a man, who is preferred before me: because he was before me. And I knew him not: but that he may be made manifest in Israel, therefore am I come baptizing with water. And John gave testimony, saying: I saw the Spirit coming down, as a dove from heaven; and he remained upon him. And I knew him not: but he who sent me to baptize with water said to me: He upon whom you shall see the Spirit descending and remaining upon him, he it is that baptizes with the Holy Spirit. And I saw: and I gave testimony that this is the Son of God.
(John 1:29-34)
Reflection:
God created each of us for a purpose. Within each of us, He placed skills and talents by which that purpose may be fulfilled. The challenge for each of us, then, is to discover that to which God calls us.
To lead us, He sent the Holy Spirit, an Advocate to guide us. (cf. John 14:26) If we do not pay attention, of course, we shall be left to our own devices; but if we listen for His light, silent sound, (cf. 1 Kings 19:12) He will lead us and guide us in how we may help accomplish His work.
The work to which God calls us may not be what we might expect as we observe the stories of prophets and saints. Rather than a call to the deeds of prophets, kings, or great warriors; He may call us to a kind moment or to offer a hand to another in need of help. He may call us to listen to a sorrowful heart. He may call us to help a troubled soul. He may call us to be the light for a darkened mind.
The evil one will plague us with thoughts that we cannot do, that we cannot accomplish what God asks of us. It is easy to accept defeat, indeed, when all seems against us, when it appears no one will stand with us, despair becomes our temptation. In such moments, when we perceive things to be looking down, we must not hesitate to look up.
When our moments appear to be confusing; when the words of wolves in the clothing of sheep (cf. Matthew 7:15) rattle in our ears, it is a time to turn to prayer and ask for the Holy Spirit to lead us. When there are those who prattle to deceive us as a means to grant them worldly power, we must resist the deceptions and endeavor to uncover the truth. Such things are not easy, for even the diligent of thought and faithful in deed may find themselves manipulated (cf. Matthew 24:24) if they do not seek the Holy Spirit to guide them in truth.
Let us, then, listen carefully to the One upon whom the Spirit came down upon, as a dove from heaven, and which remains upon Him. (cf. John 1:32-34) Let us listen to all He teaches and all which He desires to pour within our hearts; and should we find ourselves confused in our understanding, in any way, let us, then, turn to the Holy Spirit to guide us, in our purpose, in our choices, as well as the truth and blessings of the Holy Word of God. (cf. John 14:26)
Questions for further reflection:
In what ways do we endeavor to help accomplish the will of the Lord?
To what do we feel God calls us?
In what ways do we allow the Holy Spirit to guide us?
May the peace and blessings of the Lord be with you always,
Prayer Soldier
