Our Purpose

In our existence, do we understand our purpose? If it is not for the service of the Lord, for what purpose do we live? Is our purpose to only satisfy ourselves, our personal desires? What is served if that is all we do?

Is our purpose to feed our ego? Is the purpose of our works so that others will recognize us for what we do? Is our purpose that shallow?

If our purpose is but for our desire and but for this world, then, what we are and what we do is but a flash, a minuscule speck in time. Whatever we are, whatever we do will fade away as if it never was.

But, if our existence is of God and it is to serve His purpose, then, what we are and what we do lives forever in His universe. If we do not live for Him, for whom do we live? If we do not live for Him, what purpose is there to our existence? If we do not live for Him, there is no hope for eternal life. If we do not live for Him, we are only left with the opposite of the life everlasting we hope to receive in the light of God's kingdom.

If I live for Him, all things I do in His service, all things I am in His light have a much different meaning. I may seek to leave a legacy in my family, in my children, through all I meet in this world, but what legacy do I leave if all perish? What will my existence have meant if no one passes to everlasting life in God's heaven? If all perish and end in this world, then, it will all be as if it never was.

Dear Lord, it is from You that I derive my purpose. Help me to live for Your purpose and in Your light. Amen.
