At that time the disciples approached Jesus and said, ?Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?? He called a child over, placed it in their midst, and said, ?Amen, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven. Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. And whoever receives one child such as this in my name receives me. (Matthew 18:1-5)
Ambition drives us in many ways. The determination of whether it is good or bad is determined by what it brings forth. The ambition to provide for others yields blessings, while the ambition of power over others is often misused. Jesus calls us to examine the motivation within our hearts as we approach our relationships with God and one another.
Jesus calls us to humility, for it is through misguided ambitions and arrogance by which conflict and division are sowed. It is arrogance which separates many from their God as well as from one another. It is those who believe they are wise by their own estimation who are tempted to believe they have answers beyond the One who created them.
We should not be surprised that Jesus calls us to be like children for He is moved by their innocence and the openness of their hearts. He is moved by the ease which laughter escapes them and the ease by which they offer love. He is moved by the trust they have in those who are responsible to protect them. He also sees the anguish which comes as innocence is lost and how selfishness and arrogance fills the void. Through humility, we place ourselves in position to offer of ourselves. Through humility, we set aside the ambitions of arrogance. Through humility, we set aside the temptations which yield indifference and incivility.
Blessed are those who listen to His Word and humble themselves before God and one another, for they shall share in His eternal love.
